For Wheaton, 1991 was the year they proved the football program was now strong enough that they could simply “reload” instead of “rebuild.” Record-setting running back Jon Behrens was lost to graduation, but his brother Mark was joined in the backfield by Wade Gronwold, Chad Zimmel and Dave Ebel to still accumulate nearly 2200 yards rushing. But this team was all about the defense, as the Warriors held opponents to less than 8 points per game and only 162 yards per game — both records in the modern era of football.

Although they were dome-bound, the Warriors couldn’t get past an excellent Chokio-Alberta team that went on to win the state championship.
